Exploration 11

On page 638 of The Essay Connection in Aung San Suu Kyi's speech it says, "The lessons of the past will not be forgotten, but it is our hope for the future that we celebrate today." This statement really stood out to me because it means that there is nothing that can be done to save the past. However, there is hope to correct things, and make life better for the future. After doing research I found out that Aung San Suu Kyi had been placed on house arrest to prevent her from being the head of a political party. However, she is currently not under house arrest. In fact she ran for parliament just this year, and she won a seat in parliament. I obtained this information from:

The 14th Dalai Lama (shown above on the left) is awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize.
Dalai Lama is a name given to people who are supposed to be a reincarnation of an important Buddhist of the past. The 14th Dali Lama's real name is Lhamo Thondup. He is the political leader of Tibet. The Dalai Lama has tried numerous times to make a peaceful negotiation with China to let Tibet become an independent free nation. Each attempt failed, though, and by 1959 the Chinese Government was fed up with tht Dalai Lama trying to free Tibet. The Dalai Lama was so sure that the Chinese Government was trying to assassinate him, that he decided to go to India, where a lot of his supporters followed him. The Chinese Government ruled him a traitor, and a terrorist for his actions. The Dalai Lama never gave up on trying to win over Tibet's independence from China. As a result, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent efforts in trying to free Tibet from China. The Dalai Lama stepped down as the political leader of Tibet in 2011. To this day, there still has been no agreement with the Chinese Government to free Tibet. I obtained my information from:

  1. Wow that is crazy that she was on house arrest just to keep her out of the government. It is scary to see how much power that the government has just to keep people like Kyi out. It is awesome to know that she has not given up on her dream to make the world a better place.
